The Scott Porter Memorial Fund was established in January of 1999, at the time of Scott's untimely death due to cancer. A 1994 graduate of Waverly High School, Scott excelled in the sports of Cross Country and Track. Upon graduation he was awarded an athletic scholarship to the University of Louisville.
Scott's pursuit of his athletic and academic goals, led to the University of Louisville Athletic Director's, Scholar Athlete Award in 1995. He later transferred to The Ohio State University to continue to pursue his academic goals in the field of Business and Finance.
As Scott neared completion of his education, giving back to the school and community that had helped him was a very important priority. The spirit of service was illustrated by his involvement with the Cross Country Team as a volunteer assistant coach, while undergoing very difficult levels of medical treatment.
Through the Scott Porter Memorial Fund, the Foundation encourages other students with similar drive to excel, to continue their personal growth. This year our annual scholarship commitment continues with the awarding of two $1,000 scholarships to Waverly High School seniors. Additionally, gifts supporting extra-curricular activities are awarded as funding permits. To date, the memorial funds support to the high school and graduating seniors has exceeded $24,000.
Thanks to family, friends and numerous members of the community, this memorial fund was established and will be nurtured to provide support to Waverly High School for years to come. With the encouragement of community members, the decision was made to conduct an annual fund-raiser. The idea of a road race seemed very fitting due to Scott's background. The first event was held on Memorial Day Weekend of 2000, and has become an annual community event.
